Pocket pick-me-ups: just a little reminder of your positive qualities |
for scribblesbyartteachervanallen.blogspot.com
Many of us had someone in our young lives who helped build up our sense of self worth, but not everyone is that fortunate. We all have our moments of self doubt and low self esteem. I designed these pocket pick-me-ups around the idea that everyone should have a handy reminder of the strengths that they possess, even if none of the positive forces in our lives are around to remind us.
My pick-me-ups were made from seashells |
Materials:
- paper & pencil for planning
- small, pocket-sized items with a blank, smooth surface
- permanent markers to write/draw on your item
- sealant (mod podge works well & dries fast)
Use a 4-square diagram for planning |
Directions:
- Make a 4-square diagram with the statement "I am..." in the middle. Fill in all 4 squares with words that positively finish the statement.
- Develop a simple symbol for each positive trait and draw them in the square with the word.
- Choose an item to be your pocket pick-me-up.
- Write your "I am" statement along one edge of the item, finishing it with one of the traits you wrote down.
- Draw the symbol you created for that trait on your item. If your surface is big enough, make it a pattern by repeating the drawing several times!
- Seal your pocket pick-me-up to prevent the reminder of your positive trait from wearing off.
Since there is a hole in it, this shell could also be worn as a necklace or bracelet! |
What would you write on
your pocket pick-me-up?

UPDATE: My students loved this lesson!
One month later I still see pick-me-ups
worn around necks and tucked into pockets.
